When the publishers of the Rough Guides series were bought out by Penguin, Gordon McLachlan, the author of The Rough Guide to Germany was replaced by new writers. However, new editions of the book still retained substantial passages of his work, over which he is now in a legal dispute with its current publishers.

Open Access: the debate continues

Following the Government’s acceptance of the recommendations made by last summer’s Finch Report, the debate continues over the impact of the UK moving towards an open access regime for research publications. Last month’s inquiry held by the Lords Science and Technology Committee has been swiftly followed by a further review by the Commons Business, Innovation and Skills Select Committee.

On Wednesday 6 February, a debate took place at the House of Lords on the value of the publishing industry. The debate was led by Lord Alf Dubs, an ALCS Member and a great supporter of authors’ rights. He was joined on the panel by a number of fellow peers including bestselling writers Ruth Rendell and Michael Dobbs. Other staunch supporters of copyright in attendance included Lord Tim Clement-Jones and Lord Michael Wills.
