On 1 October, 77 magazine publishers transferred their mandates in business and government reprographic licensing for the majority of their publications from the Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) to the Newspaper Licensing Agency (NLA).

The phenomenal financial successes of JK Rowling and EL James have been well documented, but their earnings are far from representative of those of the vast majority of writers in the UK today. ALCS's last comprehensive research into writers' incomes – What are words worth? was published in 2007. Now ALCS plans to repeat the exercise by commissioning major new research. This autumn we will once again be asking every Member to let us know what they actually earn as a writer.
