E-lending: Book sector welcomes more dialogue on remote library access to e-books

Representatives of ALCS attended a European Writers Council (EWC) meeting in London on Friday 16th May which saw authors, publishers, booksellers and libraries welcome more dialogue in order to recommend sustainable solutions to remote access to e-books in libraries.

Delay to the Private Copying and Parody exceptions

The implementation of the copyright exceptions concerning private copying and parody has been delayed following concerns about the detail of the exceptions. It follows a letter sent to the Joint Committee on Statutory Instruments and the House of Lords Secondary Legislation Committee by the British Copyright Council (BCC) explaining how some of the Statutory Instruments did not meet specific requirements of EU law.

PLR Update: Government decides to proceed with extension to non-print formats

The Government has decided to proceed with the extension of the Public Lending Right (PLR) to rights holders of books in non-print formats. In its response to the public consultation about extending PLR to cover audiobooks, e-books downloaded for use away from library premises, and producers and narrators, the Government reaffirmed its view that there will be sufficient funds to cover the new rightsholders, who will benefit from the scheme within the 2015/16 PLR funding settlement.
