How Collective Management Organisations benefit authors

ALCS Deputy CEO Richard Combes appeared on the latest episode of the SoA Sounds podcast to discuss collecting societies for creatives.

The SoA Advisory Clinic podcast is hosted by the Society of Authors, the UK trade union for writers and illustrators. It was launched in April 2023 as a way of providing practical advice to educate and empower authors.

In this episode, Richard explains the role that Collective Management Organisations play generally, what ALCS is and how it benefits authors.

He said: “A CMO essentially exists to deal with things at scale. For example, ALCS licenses and receives money for things like photocopying of books in schools. In that situation, there’s no realistic way that an individual author could license their work or negotiate fees.”

You can listen to the episode below. It is also available on Apple Podcasts, Amazon and more.
