ALCS signs joint letter to AI companies

The Creators' Rights Alliance, of which ALCS is a member, has written to companies developing AI demanding that the unauthorised uses of creators’ works is stopped.

The Creators’ Rights Alliance (CRA) is a coalition of 23 creator organisations, representing over 500,000 UK creatives.

The letter, addressed to Microsoft, Google, OpenAI, Apple, Meta and other tech companies, reaffirms that the 500,000 creators represented by the CRA do not authorise the use of their works for the development or operation of AI models, unless they have agreed licensing arrangements with creators and rightsholders.

ALCS CEO Barbara Hayes said: “At ALCS, we believe writers should have a choice regarding the use of their works. The development of AI technologies has taken place using writers’ works without their permission, recognition or compensation. The development of AI must be guided by the principles of consent, remuneration and transparency.

We are currently consulting with our members on proposed licensing solutions that we hope will empower authors to choose how their works are used.”

Chair of Creators’ Rights Alliance, Nicola Solomon said “Creators are innovators. They are keen to use AI tools but need trusted systems that do not have the potential to infringe the rights of human creations, or their styles and personalities. Creators need to be consulted, give consent and be remunerated when their work is used to develop AI models. If we work together, we can create high quality robust systems that enhance the work of human creators and reward their creativity.”
