Support children’s literacy this festive season
Each December, we highlight a good cause that has special resonance for writers. This year we have chosen the National Literacy Trust's Christmas Appeal to help get books into the hands of those that need them most.
New research from the National Literacy Trust (NLT) shows that 2 out of 3 children and young people don’t enjoy reading in their free time, the lowest level on record. This crisis of reading hits the most disadvantaged communities hardest. In areas of high poverty, 1 in 8 children don’t even have a single book at home. A staggering 39% of children eligible for free school meals are unable to read effectively.
Behind these numbers are real children, whose futures hang in the balance. Children who struggle to read often face a lifetime of challenges – poor school performance, limited job prospects and even reduced life expectancy.
The National Literacy Trust (NLT) is appealing for support during this festive season to empower children and young people through literacy. We know that times are hard for many authors too, but if you are looking to support a literary cause and are able to do so, please consider donating.
With your support, the NLT can:
- Put books into the hands of children who need them most
- Bring creative literacy programmes into schools and communities
- Equip teachers and librarians to inspire a lifelong love of reading
“Teaching for over two decades has shown me that reading is not just about literacy, it’s about giving children a chance in life. When children learn to read with joy, they unlock doors to learning across every subject.”
Here are some examples of how your donation could help:
£7 would give a child the chance to experience the wonder of stories and discover books they love at a fun community event.
£15 would help gift books to children living in disadvantaged communities across the UK.
£20 would allow a child to attend a storytelling event or inspirational reading programme where they can choose and keep three new books.
£50 would help train more volunteers to empower parents struggling with low literacy levels with the knowledge and confidence needed to help develop their child’s literacy skills.
